New regulator in the field of personal data and artificial intelligence

On June 14, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid announced the creation of the Federal Body for Artificial Intelligence and Data – a single national regulator in the field of data, AI and digital government. The regulator will report to the UAE Cabinet, and will be headed by Omar Sultan Al-Ulama.

With the advent of a new regulator in the field of AI and PD, businesses should expect not only the adoption of clarifying acts in the field of personal data, but also the first cases of violations of the law on PD. It is important to take into account that the law on PD has been in effect since January 2022, which means that the regulator will expect that market participants have taken the necessary measures to comply with it. Therefore, now is the right time to audit PD policies and procedures for businesses registered in the UAE. This is equally important for companies operating in the mainland and freezones, except for DIFC and ADGM. The latter have their own regulators and regulators in the field of PD.
